Searching Genus for Oenothera

A new world genus. A number of species have vespartine flowers, which means they open in the evening and accounts for one of their common names. They make fine additions to the border or rock garden; easy to grow in full sun to light shade. For enthusiasts, I recommend Claude Barr's "Jewels of the Plains" (1983). Barr introduced over 80 species from the plains into cultivation including several superb Oenotheras.

OENOTHERA argillicolaJuly-August3754
Shale Barren Evening Primrose1-1.5m
A showy biennial endemic of the Appalachian shale barrens, occurring in the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania. Is able to exist in habitats other than shale barrens, but always requires a dry, open site with little or no competition. Erect or ascending stems hold glossy, narrow, lance-shaped leaves. Large yellow flowers in late summer. Will reliably self-sow.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.

Large-Flowered Evening Primrose90-120cm  Zone: 3
With a worldwide distribution, mostly as an introduced species; its exact native origins are obscure. It may be a European hybrid of two North American species. A biennial or perennia with very large yellow flowers in summer. The garden writer, Tina James, popularized this plant and according to rumor hosted ‘Evening Primrose Parties’ starring this beauty.

"You can host a ‘Primrose Party’ this year and actually see the large flowers slowly open (like in time lapse photography) right before your eyes. I watched the bright yellow flowers begin to open at 8:10 PM and by 8:20 they were fully open. The blossoms exude a beautiful lemon-lily and honeysuckle blend perfume. This is one of the most pristine and freshest scents that your nose can inhale at any one moment."
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.

OENOTHERA speciosaAll Season2414
Showy Primrose10-15cm  Zone: 5
Day bloomer with grayish-green linear leaves and cup-shaped pink flowers. Drought-resistant. Vigorous grower spreading by stolons, so best planted where it can form a colony without interference to other plants. Blooms over a long period first year and has a sweet, light fragrance. Allow to self-sow as it may not reliably overwinter in your area.
Germination Instructions: Easy, warm germinator.
