Searching Genus for GLADIOLUS

A genus best known for barely hardy perennials with swordlike leaves and showy flowers. The majority of tender species come from Africa. However, there exists a small race of hardy Glads hailing from Europe through the Near East, fairly rare in the trade, but well worth growing.

Native from Europe to the Caucasus and Turkey. An absolutely hardy species of Gladiolus with lovely purplish-red flowers. Occurs naturally in fertile, wet meadows. For a sunny spot in rich, well drained soil, moist in spring.
