Native throughout much of the northern hemisphere. Numerous, white flowers with yellow centers appear throughout summer over trifoliate, coarsely-toothed, green leaves. Flowers are followed by edible, bright red strawberries.

The delicious, small-fruited wild strawberry; native and widespread throughout North America, growing in dry to moist open woodlands and clearings, often in disturbed areas; preferring sunny locations. When the New World was discovered F. virginiana was found in "vast patches along the great river and in the woods" according to French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. Like the fruits, the leaves are high in vitamin C. This species is the parent of 90% of all the cultivated strawberries now grown. The related Coastal Strawberry, F. chiloensis is the source parent of the remaining cultivars. Wild collected in Ontario.
