Searching Genus for CHELONE

A genus of 6 perennials native to North America with large snapdragon-like flowers in pink, red or white. They resemble the head of a turtle with its mouth open. Their colour range is much appreciated in the late summer and fall. Moisture lovers and wonderful for the semi-shaded border or waterside.

Flowers are white with a red or rose tinge blooming over a long period. Will grow in full sun in a moist spot, or in semi shade. The contrast between the very dark green foliage and white flower makes this species particularly handsome. Will grow tallest in moist soil. Seed wild collected in Ontario.

Dark green, glabrous foliage with heavily toothed outer margins. Tight clusters of hooded rose-purple flowers with a yellow lip. The most common turtle head in North America. Will tolerate full sun if in moist soil. May flower first year from seed.
