Searching Genus for CELASTRUS

About 30 species of usually twining shrubs or vines native to the Americas and Asia with small green, yellow or white flowers in racemes or panicles. Fruit is an orange or yellow capsule, opening to expose a fleshy orange, red or yellow aril which encloses the seeds.

CELASTRUS scandensSummer810
American Bittersweet8m  Zone: 4
Woody vine, native in thickets and along rivers from Manitoba to Quebec. Widely planted for its colorful fruits that are harvested for winter bouquets. Leaves turn golden yellow in the fall. Flowers in panicles. Golden yellow fruit in September. Easy to grow in moist soils. Climbs by twining and a sturdy trellis or fence is needed to support its weight. Heavily fruiting but needing two plants of each sex, or one plant of each sex from different species. This is the true species, not one of the (almost impossible to tell apart) Asian imposters that is so widespread in eastern North America. Seed wild collected in Ontario.
Germination Instructions: Cold treatment required.
